★★★★★★★★★★4.8 · 780 reviews · 4 - 6 hours · from $163Our pick

Travel from Reykjavík to Fagradalsfjall with a geologist such as France, Giuseppe, Jasmine, or Joseph. Hike 1 to 1.5 hours each way across rough volcanic ground, study lava formations, and reach a crater viewpoint. Hot glowing lava is not guaranteed, and weather or gas can cancel the outing.

“Wonderful, I absolutely loved our geologist Joseph… he explained everything very clearly and even showed us the mineral deposits on the rocks… the highlight of the show is we walked on the Lava river and felt the steam coming out of the Fissure which is amazing… we hiked for 3hrs but it’s absolutely worth it… I would definitely recommend to do this hike.”

Meet your geologist guide in Reykjavík for a six-hour Fagradalsfjall hike across fresh lava fields. Guides such as Giuseppe, France, and Jasmine explain lava, fissures, and eruptions as you walk to a crater viewpoint. Expect rocky ground, steep sections, and changeable Icelandic weather.

“This was an incredible day! Giuseppe was a wonderful tour guide. He was so knowledgeable about the volcano, and he explained the different kinds of lava rocks, which we would have walked by of he had not been there. I learned a lot! I really enjoyed having lunch on the cooled lava, even though apparently there is still lava flowing about 35 meters below us. The volcano has fairly regular eruptions, with the next one anticipated for late June. About the hike: The first part of the trail is fairly easy, with dirt and gravel paths. There are some fairly steep switchbacks, but Giuseppe planned breaks along the way to…”

Spend about nine hours exploring Reykjanes, with a guided hike across the 2021 Fagradalsfjall lava field, scenic stops such as Kleifarvatn Lake, and two hours at the Blue Lagoon. Guides including Hler, HBO, Mario, and Siggi are praised for safety, humor, and clear local insight.

“Breathtaking. Could see solidified lava fields. no fresh red hot lava at the time of our hike but there is still hot air coming out of the rocks below. Lovely experience and good weather. Our hike was about 9km. It felt generally fine to hike without hiking sticks, but some hikers brought their own and felt more comfortable with it. To each his/her own. My guide Hler was very informative and included driving around the ghost town of Grindavík where we could still see effects of the latest eruption. Great reward for ourselves at the blue lagoon after!”
