A volcano is not a museum with opening hours. Summit access closes on wind, ash and alert level, the road up shuts for snow, and the permits are counted. These four are the ones to read the small print on.

The walking is the point: ash slopes, rim paths and lava crusts.
A volcano hike is not a mountain climb. Most are two to four hours on gravel with a guide who does the route-finding and carries the gas monitor. These are the ones people come back raving about.
On Batur and Bromo the volcano day begins at two in the morning.
The reason is heat and cloud: by nine the summit is in mist and the ash is too hot to sit on. So the jeep comes for you in the dark, you walk up by torchlight, and the crater rim clears just as the sun comes off the Java Sea. Bring a fleece. It is genuinely cold up there.

Iceland is the only place where you can book a look at brand-new ground.
The Reykjanes fissures have erupted repeatedly since 2021, and the tours move with them: a lava-field walk one season, a viewpoint hike the next, an indoor pour of real molten rock when the ground goes quiet. Guides read the exclusion zones daily, which is exactly why you want one.
Fuji is a working volcano with a bus stop halfway up it.
The Fifth Station sits at 2,300 m and the road closes in winter. Most Tokyo day trips pair it with Hakone: a ropeway over the sulphur vents at Owakudani, a boat across Lake Ashi, and back on the Shinkansen before dark. The climbing season is July to early September, and only then.

What a day on a volcano actually costs.
Every trip on the site, grouped by price. A crater walk with a guide costs less than most city food tours; a helicopter over a lava field costs more than the flight you took to get there.

Waterfalls and canyons exist everywhere. Water that boils out of the ground on a timetable, a lagoon fed by a power station, and a room where they pour real molten basalt do not.

Strokkur in Iceland goes off every five to ten minutes and you will still flinch. Rotorua does it differently: Lady Knox is set off each morning at a quarter past ten with soap, and the Wai-O-Tapu terraces around it run orange, green and sulphur-yellow with no help at all. Both are boardwalk visits, both smell of rotten eggs, and both are fine for anyone who can walk half an hour.

Bathing in the runoff
A geothermal bath is not a spa treatment, it is a use for surplus heat. The Secret Lagoon sits beside a small hot spring and a working greenhouse; Bali's Toya Devasya pools are fed off the Batur crater floor and are where the sunrise treks end up at eight in the morning. Take a towel you do not mind losing to sulphur, and leave silver jewellery in the room.

A controlled lava pour
Reykjavik has a venue that melts real basalt to 1,100 degrees and pours it down a chute into a room with you in it. The heat arrives before the glow does. It exists because eruptions are unpredictable and the demand to see lava is not, and it is the only reliable way to watch the stuff move without a helicopter and a lot of luck.
